Key Insights on Literacy Education with Dr. Amy Elleman
AIM Institute’s 2023 Research to Practice Symposium examined the complexity of reading comprehension and provided educators insights for classroom practice. During the event, we sat down with one of our esteemed presenters and the Director for Middle Tennessee State University’s Literacy Studies Ph.D Program, Dr. Amy Elleman, to hear what she’s excited about in literacy, what she would like people to know about reading comprehension, and her Call to Action to the literacy community.
The Grassroots Movement in Literacy Education
Dr. Elleman highlighted a significant shift in literacy education—a grassroots movement driven by educators themselves. This movement signifies a long-needed bridge between extensive research and classroom application. Educators, now more than ever, are voicing their needs for effective teaching methods that are grounded in solid research. Dr. Elleman’s enthusiasm for this change reflects a brighter future where research is a practical toolkit for educators.
A Holistic Approach to Literacy Research
One of the most exciting developments in literacy, according to Dr. Elleman, is the movement towards a holistic understanding of literacy components. How can we integrate these components in order to create a better learning experience for students?
The Need for High-Quality Instruction
Dr. Elleman emphasized again and again the importance of high-quality instruction. She highlighted the role of stakeholders in demanding and ensuring quality literacy education for their children and students. Dr. Elleman also advocated for using vetted sources, such as IES practice guides, to ensure that the instruction is both effective and research-based.
Patience and Perseverance
Dr. Elleman touched upon the difficulties of learning to read and the need for patience and perseverance. Educators must be patient with themselves as they navigate these challenges and equally patient with their students. Significant change in literacy, as Dr. Elleman notes, is a gradual process that requires time and dedication.
