Key Insights on Literacy Education with Dr. Tiffany Hogan
AIM Institute’s 2023 Research to Practice Symposium examined the complexity of reading comprehension and provided educators insights for classroom practice. During the event, we sat down with one of our esteemed presenters, Dr. Tiffany Hogan, to hear what she’s hopeful about in literacy, what she would like people to know about reading comprehension, and her Call to Action to the literacy community. Watch the video above or read our highlights below.
The Emergence of Implementation Science
Dr. Hogan expressed her excitement for implementation science—the study of methods and strategies that facilitate the uptake of evidence-based practice and research into education policy and practice. She carefully differentiated implementation science from the science of reading and the science around teaching reading, stating that it’s not enough to do the research, and it’s not even enough to have it in practice.
The Need for Collaborative Partnerships
A key theme in our conversation with Dr. Hogan was the power of collaboration in advancing literacy. She highlighted the dynamic conversations happening among researchers, educators, parents, and policymakers. Dr. Hogan emphasized the importance of collaboration between researchers and practitioners to disseminate findings and refine research based on diverse practice settings. This iterative process, facilitated by partnerships like those at AIM Institute, is crucial for tailoring research to meet the practical needs of educators.
Two Insights on Reading Comprehension
Dr. Hogan underscored two essential aspects educators should know about reading comprehension:- Some children struggle with reading comprehension due to lifelong language learning difficulties. These challenges, rooted in neurological differences, can impact their ability to comprehend text.
- Beyond teaching word reading, it’s crucial to apply the same level of rigor to systematically and explicitly teaching language abilities across the curriculum.
A Call to Action for Early Screening
Finally, Dr. Hogan called upon leaders, educators, teachers, parents, and policymakers to prioritize early screening for language difficulties. Early intervention can lead to significant improvements over time, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to develop strong reading and comprehension skills.
